The Power of the Web

The internet is a pretty remarkable resource. One of my favorite websites, Xplane put out a new video that puts the internet into perspective.

Being tech savvy means I’m usually the one my friends and family come to when they can’t figure something technology-related out. It looks as if maybe one day, the rate of innovation might leave even me in the dust. Scary.

Facebook gets “Twitterized”

So late last week, Facebook released yet another design change to its ever-popular website. As with every change to date, the users unleashed a slew of backlash towards the latest update. Most peoples’ displeasure came in the form of angry status updates (“I hate FB…WTF!!!!” etc.) and the always effective petition groups (How to get the old Facebook Back). Personally, I welcomed most of the changes as improvements; it puzzled me why people opposed everything Facebook did to the site.

Facebook Haters

So Facebook finally went live with it’s latest design and as expected, the backlash began right away. Search Facebook Groups for “new Facebook” and you’ll see results such as “I HATE THE NEW FACEBOOK (STALKER) Layout” or “The New Facebook Sucks!” or “I Hate the New Facebook”. Looking at most of these groups, it is clear that these people are misunderstanding what Facebook is meant to be.

The new face of Facebook

Everyone’s favorite procrastination tool is due for it’s 2nd major makeover. I’ve been playing with the new version for a little while now and evidence of other social networking sites have made their way into Facebook’s new design. The look and feel is mostly the same; the single largest change is the merging of the newsfeed with the wall reminiscent of Twitter or Pownce. You’ll also notice the ability to clean up your profile by using tabs to organize all your content; applications no longer dominate the page. With these changes, emphasis is being put more on social interaction. While I like the direction Facebook is taking, most Facebook users will probably immediately oppose the change espescially given the fact that the Twitter-like concept of the new Facebook is still largely unfamiliar to most people. I fully expect hundreds of “Petition to change Facebook back to the way it was” groups to pop up.

Facebook is SO 2006

For a while now, I’ve been hearing and seeing a lot about Twitter in the blogosphere and the internet community in general. I didn’t have a sense of what it was aside from something involving text messaging (SMS – short messaging service). Seeing as my SMS on my prior cell plan was disabled, I never looked into it. Now as a new subscriber to an unlimited SMS plan as well as my never ending quest for distractions, I decided to take Twitter for a spin. The first question that people are quick to ask is: “What is Twitter?” The answer is slightly more complicated, but someone at some point coined the term “micro-blogging” to describe Twitter. and Cats.In general, it’s a different perspective on social networking that we have grown accustomed to with MySpace, Facebook, Friendster and the likes. The general premise is that there are lot of little things we see, hear or do throughout the day that our friends may be interested in, but we wouldn’t necessarily send an email or IM to announce. That’s where Twitter comes in. You submit a 140 character “tweet” via the Twitter website, IM or SMS where your message is then posted and sent to your friends (via SMS if the setting is turned on).
