Smartphone Lust

In the recent wake of smartphone-related news, I’ve never been more unhappy to be locked in to a Verizon contract for another six months. For me, the iPhone is a no-brainer, the sleek Apple design and the versatility it gains from the App Store really leaves much to be desired of my current Samsung SCH-U740.

The iPhone isn’t the only contender to be my most desired smartphone. While the Google G1 and the Android platform looked promising, it’s first iteration didn’t really live up to it’s full potential or hype in my opinion. The second generation Android phone doesn’t change much. With my general dislike of BlackBerry or Windows Mobile based devices, I was thrilled with what the Palm Pre has to offer. Reading about it really doesn’t do it justice; you need to watch the demo of the new WebOS to really get a sense of why it’s so cool and how Palm has positioned itself to be the most legitimate iPhone competitor. One of the few things I dislike about Apple

Today, I was chatting with an Apple Rep with a few questions as I am looking to up the RAM in my MacBook Pro to 4 GB. She directed me to this page.

Crazy expensive apple memory.

Crazy expensive apple memory.

As much as I love Apple products, this does not help their image of being overly expensive. Apple in fact isn’t nearly as expensive as people thin and in fact in many cases even better priced than other manufacturers’ similarly configured machines. RAM hasn’t cost $200 for a long time now. So the bottom line is that I’m still looking for some cheap PC2-5300 RAM. Anyone know some good deals?

iPhone 3G Launch Day

Like every other Apple Store in the world, the Apple Somerset found itself host to a long line fanboys hoping to snatch the coveted iPhone 3G. As much as I love the iPhone (and i do love it), I’m not entirely sure I’d camp out like many a loyal fanboy have done.

e-Antiques

While cleaning my room last week, I happened upon this interesting little gizmo. No it wasn’t a flux capacitor or a time machine. I had in fact found my first MP3 player dating back to the KaZaA era. By today’s standards, the specifications are laughable (128MB internal capacity expandable to 256MB with additional SmartMedia card), but also a testament to how dramatically Apple’s iPod changed the digital music scene. This is especially true considering I purchased this generic brand (who’s ever heard of IM Sports outside of high school?) player over a Sony Mini-Disc player. I’m glad I followed my avoid-Sony policy as Mini-Disc joined the ranks of Betamax, and ATRAC amongst other defunct formats.

Organized – Widget Style

Yesterday, while surfing the interwebs, I came accross a helpful looking little Dashboard widget called Organized by the fine folks at iSlayer. After downloading it without hesitation, I have concluded that this will perhaps be the most useful widget I have installed. Being the sucker for efficiency that I am, I like how this widget consolidates several widgets (Google Calendar, Checkmarker, Clock, Stickies) into one. It also doesn’t look like it was designed by someone who failed second grade art class.
