Starbucks Rewards

A couple of mugs from StarbucksIf you’re the consumer whore that I am, you probably go to Starbucks. I know for me, Starbucks runs occurred at fairly regularly intervals (funded by the Starbucks Cards I received from my graduation party). While I’m not one of those people who necessarily believes in Starbucks’ superiority over other coffees, it’s a chill place to hang out. Well, Starbucks just got even better with their recently unveiled rewards program: Starbucks Rewards.

The SEO Rapper

If you’ve ever created your own website and love hip-hop, then you’ll relate to this song by the SEO Rapper: SEO consultant by trade with a rapping alter ego. But I guess the references he makes would only be funny to a select few internet geeks (read: people such as myself). Video after the jump. Continue reading ‘The SEO Rapper’

Falbum and K2 integration

For those of you who have tried to use Randombyte’s Falbum plugin with WordPress and the K2 theme know that making it display properly is a little bit tricky.

The official Falbum wiki offered some insight into properly integrating the plugin in K2. However, for a long time now, the fix was geared towards WordPress 2.0.4, Falbum 0.6.6, and K2 0.9. I’ve managed to make the plugin work on my WordPress installation (2.5.1 with Falbum 0.7.1 and K2 v1 RC6 revision 692) with a little experimentation.

Pro sports rejects find hope in USARPSL

While surfing the interweb the other day, I stumbled across a little something that epitomizes our country’s incredible capacity to create new markets for the public to indulge their inner consumer whore. Uncrate featured a trip to Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort for the USA Rock Paper Scissors Championship:

Looking for an excuse to get away this weekend? Then book your tickets for Vegas and head over to the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino for the 2008 USA Rock Paper Scissors League Championship. Sponsored by Bud Light, the event will run all weekend, with the champ being crowned on Sunday, June 22. The champ will receive a $50,000 prize and a ticket to compete in Beijing, China during the Summer Olympics. Not in the Olympics, mind you, but instead in the inaugural International Rock Paper Scissors Federation Championship, where they will compete against the champions from Canada, Guam, Hong Kong, Ireland and Malaysia to see who is the world’s best Rock Paper Scissors player. 1, 2, 3… go!

Is it even possible to be “good” at rock, paper, scissors? If it is, someone please enlighten me because as far as I’m concerned, I’m not convinced this is something that requires a league, $50,000 prizes, and trips to Beijing. It’s incredible that such endeavors are able to be profitable; but I suppose we’re in the one country that would do it. Knowing people buy into stuff like this makes my own consumer whorish tendencies pale in comparison.

Battery Woes

Something a lot of people have mentioned lately is the poor battery life on their laptops. Certainly as a college student, a mobile lifestyle doesn’t really lend itself to sitting in one place for extended periods of time. For this reason, battery life is of utmost importance. However, to may peoples’ dismay, their batteries don’t hold up quite as well after as little as a few months. The manufacturer isn’t necessarily at fault. More often than not, the way you use your electronic devices dictates it’s battery life. Lithium ion batteries are subject to losing their capacity to hold a charge after roughly 300 cycles (discharging the battery and recharging it is one cycle). This is further shortened if you leave your laptop plugged in for extended periods of time.

For Macbook users, Apple has created a page on their documentation site that describes a process called calibration. A simple process that if followed regularly, should extend the life of your laptop’s battery to something much more respectable. I have also taken to the practice of removing my battery when I plan on keeping my machine plugged in to AC power for extended periods of time and unplugging my machine when it is shut down.

These practices aren’t only limited to laptop batteries. Any device that uses lithium ion batteries (most devices nowadays) can be saved with these techniques. While some gadgets, such as the iPod does not have a removable battery, I generally minimize the amount of time spent charging as to keep my cycle count down. For those of you with Macbook batteries to beat to salvage, I would recommend purchasing a replacement battery from Fastmac as opposed to Apple. You’ll save yourself a pretty penny and get a higher capacity battery to boot. The same advice generally applies for other manufacturers as well but you’ll have to shop around for the best deal because I don’t know.

Hope this helps!
